This town is one of three of its kind in the U.S., making it a national historic landmark. Located in Hamilton County, Ohio, Greenhills has a population of around 3,600. A planned community, Greenhills was established by the federal government during the Great Depression.
Today, most of the village is considered a National Historic Landmark for its history as a planned modernist community. It is one of three “Greenbelt Communities” built by the short-lived Resettlement Administration during the 1930s, as a result of the Great Depression.
The other two greenbelt communities include Greenbelt, Maryland and Greendale, Wisconsin. Originally, Greenhills was designed to be surrounded by a “belt” of woodland and natural landscaping. Many families there included 3rd and 4th-generation descendants of the village’s original “pioneers” who occupied the historic international-style townhomes. The original government-built area, the Greenhills Historic District, is the part of the town that is currently listed on the National Register of Historic Places as a National Historic Landmark. The community’s James Whallon House, which is the village hall, is also listed in the National Register of Historic Places. The landmarked area encompasses about three-quarters of the area within the village bounds. In addition to visiting the historic landmark, visitors can enjoy the Queen City Bourbon Cruise, the Omni Funplex, Neusole Glassworks, Mt. Healthy Haunted Hall, and American Legacy Tours.
